Philosophy of EdUCATION

My philosophy of education revolves around:

1. engaging all students in learning through effective music instruction

2. nurturing student well-being

3. developing respectful community members

4. applying collaborative and reflective teaching

To elaborate:

1. I believe in inclusive and hands-on instruction that is fun and enables students of all backgrounds and learning needs to engage in learning, show progress and enjoy making music. Music touches every student differently and differentiated instruction allows students with varying skills and identities to fulfill their potential. It’s rewarding to see the ownership of learning and connections students make when singing, laughing and working together.

2. Teaching in Norway and NW+SE Wisconsin has proven that regardless of location, cultural background or class size, student wellbeing is critical. It’s an educator’s privilege to mentor students and build confidence. A student’s best learning cannot take place if they feel inhibited by fear of expression or social-emotional barriers. For that reason, I nurture positive relationships based on respect, openness and a mutual understanding of expectations. My classrooms are adaptive, safe and productive so students can feel comfortable expressing themselves, stretch beyond their own expectations and excel.

3. I want students to discover their strengths and know they’re valued members of the class community. When students grow as respected and respectful young adults, they – in turn – are more likely to be kind, giving and responsible contributors to the school, local and global communities.

4. Society depends on change and growth. It’s expected of students and I expect the same of myself as a life-long learner. Educators should reflect on practices and seek ways to improve through professional development and continuing education. Teaching is also improved through effective collaboration with colleagues, which can inform next steps (assessment, instructional strategies, interventions) to advance student learning and achieve school goals. Through collaboration and reflection, I ensure learning is taking place and my philosophy of education is put into practice.
